1st Annual January 1st Scout Mountain TT
Our Year So Far
We've been busy hosting events and supporting our bicycle community. As the season transitions, cyclecross is right around the corner. We have a few regional bike races in August and the conclusion for many of us, Logan to Jackson (LOTOJA), September 12th. For the convenience of all, previous event articles have been reactivated. Make a mark in your planner for next year. In particular, the Allan Butler Memorial Criterium in Idaho Falls deserves the support of all community racers in Idaho,Utah, and Wyoming. We had double the participation this year on a classic western downtown criterium course. For those that did not come up to Idaho Falls, you missed it.
Not to forget, ICE once again did exceptionally well in Masters and Elite National level events sporting several National Champions and top placings. The latest is Sam Krieg's eight place in the TT at Elite Nationals! Not bad for our small club.
Women of ICE
The women of ICE, or better known as ICE Babies, are those to be feared not only because their kits are the best looking out there, but because they have proven with their results that they are fast and dangerous. They include Kris Walker, Karen Apple/Krieg, Jen Ward ( hold national champion titles!!), Tana Stone, Jamie Bennion (a great sprinter), Diane Evans (aka Pink Lightening), and the newly "catted up" Stephanie Falls (aka FireCross) make ICE's women pro 1-2-3 team. We are happy this year to have a very strong cat 4 woman's team as well. Most of the cat 4 women are based out of northern Utah, but hey, we're happy to have them! They include Danielle Trejo (the feather that floats up hills), Stephanie Skoryeko (a former collegiate runner with an amazing aerobic engine), Lynn Hewitt (spreading Jamaican peace and love), Heidi Moser (another fantastic climber), and Anna Podgorney (a danger on the flats). For many of them racing is a first, but they are very impressive and you will be hearing more about all of our fantastic girly, yet burly ICE babies soon!!

We also have Facebook pages for the Tour of Marsh Valley, Taxday Grind Curcuit Race, Allan Butler Criterium, and the 9th Annual fish Creek Ride. Allan Butler Memorial Criterium - August 1st
Thanks to all that made the trip to Idaho Falls for the 3rd Annual Allan Butler Criterium. Results have been posted below. We know that we have some gaps in the results. please contact Rob Van Kirk to add a placing or help us figure it out. Mostly the problems are in the category IV and V race. Thank! and see you next year. Oh and the bonus race in Jackson on Sunday had near double the participation from last year. Those guys hope to move the race to downtown Jackson next year. So make plans for next year!
For those that didn't have the chance to know Allan, the first photo depicts a determined young man as part of EDC's Espoir Team in 1997 then a few years later as the consummate champion with Logan Race Club. Later that early year in June of '97, Allan won the Utah State Championship with his teammate Tyler Servoss finishing a squeaker third to Jay Smith. Rob drove the break of six including Tyler, Martin Grygar, Rodney Mena, Eric Marland, and one other. Uhl Albert and I kept the main field in check with Uhl driving tempo and me covering attacks and protecting Allan. At the bottom of the finishing climb I told Allan to stay on Jay Smith's wheel and drop him at some point along the way. Allan and Jay soon bridged up to the remnants of the break except for Tyler who had dropped the break himself.
Allan's development as a cyclist, human being, friend to many of us, husband, and dad set an example for all of us.
Allan was the consummate sportsman, thinking of his neighbors and fellow racers first, even when Levi Leipheimer at Little Mountain told him when Allan made the break with four other RMCC riders,"listen son, we can do this the easy way or we can do this the hard way," Gulp! Allan was fifth.
We miss you man!
9th Annual Fish Creek Ride - August 9th
We think this is the best 120 mile Lotoja training you will find in the region. We always regroup after town-line sprints (4) and hill-top sprints (4). (Points allocated and beer consumed) For those that want a little less, the ride is easily configured for 40, 60, 80, and 100 miles. Departs from Rob's at 9:00 am sharp (Don't miss the train) for a 40 mile meander to St. Anthony, ID along the Henry's Fork river and back to Rob's. Then a ten minute break before departing to just outside the South West corner of Yellowstone Park at near 7000 feet only to plunge 2000 feet in ten miles in a screaming switchback forested descent down Baker Draw. That leaves one-hour forty minutes to return to Rob's in order to beat six hours. We regroup for the last time at the top of Baker Draw, then it's race time to the Ashton town line.
2009 Tour of Marsh Valley on Facebook
Kind of a rainy day for the Tour, but that is spring time in Idaho. We want to thank all that came out to brave the elements! At least we didn't ride over Bald Mountain Pass in the Kamas To Evanston Stage of the High Uintas Stage Race!
Jackson Hole Criterium - August 2nd
Thanks to United Cyclist of Jackson Hole, racers can double up and take on a second criterium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming the day after the Allan Butler Criterium in Idaho Falls.
ICE Crushes at Master's Nationals
Ice Rocky Mountain Surgery Center had the most successful day ever at Masters Nationals in Louisville KY. The small cycling community of Pocatello took home 2 nationals crowns in the time trial. Kris Walker has been in search of a masters TT championship for several years and was able to finally mark that goal off her list as she won the Time Trial in a stellar time of 34:30. Karen Appleby defended her TT jersey with a super strong performance of 34:40. Both riders came to Louisville with the goal of crushing the time trial and posting some super fast times. Mission accomplished! Sam Krieg rode the best time trial of his life for 2nd in the Masters 30-34. A huge thanks to Rocky Mountain Surgery Center for the incredible support of ICE over the past few seasons. Bike racing in southern Idaho is alive and stronger than ever.
